About Bellaire, Texas

Location

Bellaire is a city in southwest Harris County, Texas, United States, within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. Bellaire is surrounded by the cities of Houston and West University Place. It is commonly known as the “City of Homes”, owing to its mostly residential character although it has many offices along the I-610 Loop within the city limits.

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, the city population was 17,202. This includes 6,755 households, and 5,627 families residing within the city limits. The racial and ethnic makeup of the city was 65.2% non-Hispanic White, 2.8% Black and African American, 0.1% American Indian and Alaska Native, 22.3% Asian, 1.3% multiracial, and 8.2% Hispanic and Latin American of any race as of 2019. 

History

Bellaire was founded in 1908 by William Wright Baldwin, who was the president of the South End Land Company. Baldwin was a native of Iowa and was the vice president of the Burlington Railroad. The city was founded on what was part of William Marsh Rice’s nearly 10,000-acre ranch.

Economy

The City of Bellaire has property zoned for light industrial, commercial, and mixed-use residential and commercial uses. Bellaire had 8,120 employed civilians as of the 2000 Census, including 3,835 females. Of the civilian workers, 5,368 (66.1%) were private, for-profit wage, and salary workers. Of these, 689 (8.5% of the total Bellaire civilian workforce) were employees of their own corporations; 952 (11.7%) were private, non-profit wage and salary workers; 446 (5.5%) worked for local governments; 479 (5.9%) were state government workers. Additionally, one of the largest employers is Chevron with a 28-acre campus. 

Culture & Recreation

Bellaire is home to many parks as well as neighborhood pools, tennis courts, picnic areas, and others. Bellaire holds annual Fourth of July parades and annual “‘snow’ in the park” Christmas celebrations. Some notable people from the area include comedic actors and brothers, Dennis & Randy Quaid.
