Humble is a city in the Houston metropolitan area of Texas. It is a 9.82 square mile city 17 miles north of Houston located in Harris County.

The population count recorded in the 2020 census for Humble was 15,819. This is the same number as the estimated population count in 2018 showing a stagnated population.

History

Humble, first settled in 1828, was named after Pleasant Smith Humble, an early settler from Louisiana. In 1866 he moved with his family to Texas to purchase land in Harris County. Dedicated to improvement,  he took on the responsibility of the local mail service, and in 1886 he applied for a United States Post Office on behalf of the community. On the application, he wrote the name of the town and called it Humble, Texas. In 1904 oil was discovered in Humble and by 1905 Humble’s oilfield was the largest oil producer in Texas. The arrival of the rail lines in 1904 allowed for oil to be shipped out creating a boost to the economy. The oil field is still active today producing over 138,835,590 barrels of oil. Humble is the home of the Humble Oil and Refining Company, a predecessor of Exxon.

Climate

The average summer temperatures hover around the mid-90s with winter temperatures in the mid-20s. THey average 204 sunny days per year with approximately 50 inches of rainfall annually.

Fun Fact

The Humble Museum houses a medical clinic called the McKay Clinic Medical Museum. Visitors have the opportunity to experience how different the medical profession was less than 100 years ago. Its focus is on public education and research.
