La Porte is located within Harris County, Texas. This area is also within the Bay Area of the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. It is also the fourth-largest city incorporated in Harris County. The city has a total of 20 square miles of area.
La Porte was founded in 1892 as a speculative real estate venture by an investment group. To follow, a 22-acre public space known as Sylvan Grove was reserved by the waterfront of the city. Soon after, Sylvan Grove developed with bathhouses, piers, and a Victorian hotel and dance pavilion, making it the most popular location in Houston for tourism. Later, in 1896, it was renamed Sylvan Beach. It revamped itself following the oil boom as a tourist center although it was rebuilt in 1915 following another hurricane.
As with the majority of home-rule cities in Texas, La Porte has a charter for a council-manager form of government. These elected council members serve as a legislative body to make policy. To do so, they hire the city manager, who is the operating officer for the city. Since 2012, the city manager has been Corby Alexander, who originated from Henderson, Texas. Elections for city council members are held at the same time as school board elections.
The city is located adjacent to three major economic hubs of the Bay Area and Greater Houston. These areas include the Bayport Industrial District, the Battleground Industrial District, and the Barbours Cut shipping terminal.
La Porte is or was home to such notable people as a locally born actress, Jessica Boone, gold medalist, Kerron Clement, Dallas Cowboys football player, Curvin Richards, Shaun Rogers of the NFL, and many others.
