About Pasadena, Texas

Location

Pasadena is located within the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. It is also the 20th most populated city in the large state, and the second most populous city in Harris County. Pasadena contains a total area of 44.5 square miles and is bordered by the Houston Ship Canal on the northern end with Galveston Bay to its south. 

 

History

The area that is now Pasadena was founded in 1893 by Galveston native, John H. Burnett. He was reminded of the beautiful vegetation of Pasadena, California, and named the Texas city for it. In years prior, rancher, Sam Allen purchased 350 acres of land, which grew to 15,000 in 1888. By the 1900s, Pasadena voted to be incorporated, and was in 1928. In recent history, Pasadena has become a largely working-class suburb of Houston, Texas. 

 

Demographics

As of the 2020 United States Census, Pasadena had 151,950 people, 48,174 households, and 36,201 families residing in the city. As of the census of 2010, there were 149,043 people. The city continues to grow. 

 

Economy

The economy in Pasadena is comprised of many businesses including petroleum and gas, as well as refining, solar panel manufacturing, aerospace engineering, healthcare, and others. The economy is also affected by the Houston Ship Channel and other shipping and industrial businesses around Houston. Another economic provider and employer for local residents is the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center owned by the Nation Aeronautics and Space Administration in nearby Clear Lake. Many other large employers in the area include The Boeing Company, Mundy Company, Shell Chemical, San Jacinto College, Bayshore Medical Center, and the local city employees as well as the Pasadena Independent School District. 

 

Culture & Recreation

Pasadena maintains many baseball fields, tennis courts, and 43 parks across the city. They also have over 14 miles of trails, youth centers, recreation facilities with polls, dog parks, golf courses, museums, and other cultural and recreational staples available. Some of the largest community centers include East Harris County Activity Center, Bay Area Community Center, and the Clear Lake Water Front.
