About Richardson, Texas

Location: 

Richardson is a city located in both Dallas County and Collin County, Texas. It is also an inner suburb of Dallas. The Lake Highlands area of Dallas borders the south end of the city while West Plano and Dallas surround it on the west and southwest. The entire city area totals 28.6 square miles. Other bordering cities include Garland and Murphy. 

 

History: 

The area was settled by Kentucky and Tennessee emigrants in what is present-day Richardson. Prior to the Civil War, a small settlement, Breckenridge was established within the city limits. The city was named after the secretary of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad, Alfred S. Richardson. Once the railroads were established, they began surveying and selling lots to newcomers. Over the years, the industry grew alongside the population while railroads and companies like Texas Instruments, which borders south Richardson bolstered the local economy. 

 

Demographics: 

As of the 2020 United States Census, Richardson was comprised of 119,469 people, 44,136 households, and 29,113 families residing in the city. In 2015, the American Community Survey noted that there were 106,123 people, 40,020 households, and 27,327 families residing in the city. The city continues to increase its population and local economy despite decreases in other cities nearby. 

 

Economy: 

Richardson is home to the University of Texas at Dallas as well as the Telecom Corridor, a high concentration of United States telecommunications companies. Today, more than 5,000 businesses operate within the 28-mile city area. Corporate headquarters for many large companies are located in Richardson including Metro by T-Mobile, Fossil Group, Wingstop Restaurants, BlueCross BlueShield, RealPage, Samsung Mobile, Lennox Internation, id Software, and many others. Some of the largest employers in Richardson include State Farm Insurance with over 8,000 employees and  AT&T Inc. with over 5,000 employees. 

 

Culture & Recreation:

Richardson is home to the Charles W. Eisemann Center for Performing Arts. It is the primary venue in the city for both the Richardson Symphony Orchestra as well as the Plano Symphony Orchestra.
