About The Woodlands


The Woodlands is a special-purpose district and census-designated place (CDP) in the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The Woodlands is primarily located in Montgomery County, with small parts extending into Harris County. The Woodlands has a total area of 43.9 square miles. The terrain is mostly flat and comprised of heavily forested areas. 



The area that is now The Woodlands was used by the Akokisa and Bidai peoples, who relied on the freshwater of Spring Creek. In 1984, construction in the Indian Springs neighborhood near the creek discovered Bidai artifacts. 



As of the 2010 U.S. census, The Woodlands had a total population of 93,847. In 2021, its population was estimated at 119,000 per a survey by The Howard Hughes Corporation. According to the 2020 United States Census, The Woodlands was comprised of 114,436 people, 41,210 households, and 31,063 families residing in the city limits, resulting in steady growth over the last decade. 


Culture & Recreation

The Woodlands is comprised of 151 urban parks within the city, with all residents being 10 minutes or less from a park. The areas around Spring Creek are protected by the nature preserve. The Woodlands also offers many entertainment outlets including many movie theaters, hundreds of restaurants, a public waterway, and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion. The venue is home to the Houston Symphony. Sixteen art benches lie along the waterway and are popular in the city among other attractions such as Market Street, the shopping district, and others. The Woodlands also hosts the Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival which is overseen by the Woodlands Arts Council. 



The Woodlands is also home to a large music scene including the Woodlands Concert Band, established in 2001. It also hosts the Bayou City Community Band Festival annually. The city also has many amateur radio stations with 199 licensed radio operators in town.
