Constellation Energy is the number one producer of carbon-free energy in the United States. Located in Baltimore, Maryland, With 2100 employees, Constellation Energy conducts business through several subsidiaries under a merchant energy business and Baltimore Gas and Electric. They provide energy-related products and services as well as risk management solutions and own and operate electric generation sites across the country.

History of Constellation

In 2012, the Constellation Energy Group merged with Exelon and was rebranded as Constellation, an Exelon company. Eight years later they split off from Exelon and became Constellation Energy. The separation placed Exelon as the largest transmission and distribution utility in the nation. They serve more than a million customers through six regulated utilities, including Atlantic City Electric (ACE), Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), Delmarva Power & Light (DPL), PECO Energy Company (PECO), and Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco).

What Constellation Energy Does

As the largest generator of clean energy, Constellation is a wholesale supplier to retail energy providers. Through the wholesale market, they are able to provide real-time alignment of the energy supply and demand to keep pricing in check. They also are able to manage market volatility and deliver power consistently and reliably and assist their customers in meeting healthy environmental goals.

Constellation Energy serves residential, commercial, industrial, and government entities both gas and electric services through fixed, index, and blended pricing options. One-third of all Fortune 100 companies rely on Constellation for their energy needs. In 2020 they provided their customers with 32,400 MW of power consisting of nuclear, solar, natural gas, and hydro, and 215 TWh of power for their commercial customers. They offer residential and commercial customers budget stability and pricing flexibility while keeping the health of the environment at the forefront. Through their wholesale electricity supply business, they provide energy to utilities, municipal co-ops, and energy retailers across the U.S.

Company Goals

Constellation Energy is concerned about the environment and the negative effects of fossil fuel-generated electricity. To combat these effects they have set goals to promote clean energy and to educate the public about the hazards of carbon emissions. They intend to produce 95% carbon-free electricity by 2030 and 100% by 2040. Additionally, they are working towards a 100% reduction of operations-driven emissions by 2040. In 2020 they acquired Pear.ai which is an engineering firm that uses data analysis and artificial intelligence to help customers reduce their carbon footprint while managing their usage and costs.

Opportunities

In a push for clean energy, Constellation Energy offers several programs to educate and address the energy challenges of today. Through their E2 Energy Grant Program, they offer grant money to students in 6th grade through college to work on current environmental issues created through poor energy practices. The program was launched in 2010 and over 5 million dollars has been granted to 250,000 eligible students. The Community Champions Program also grants money to individuals who want to improve their communities. They can apply for up to $500 and thus far 2500ncommunity projects have been funded. Employees are encouraged to give back and Constellation supports their efforts through two programs, Impact Leaders and Employee Giving. Additionally, Constellation supports summer camps for underrepresented children and gives them a learning opportunity. Through a virtual exchange, students are able to enter nuclear power plants where they can learn about energy production. The hope is they will be encouraged to join the crusade for clean, reliable energy in the future.
