Green Mountain Energy
Green Mountain Energy was founded in 2002 and was the first energy company dedicated to clean energy in Texas. Its goal is to provide clean energy solutions and reduce harmful carbon emissions through the use of carbon offsets and Renewable Energy Credits.
Carbon Offsets
Green Mountain Energy works hard to reduce greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere which trap heat and cause adverse effects on the environment. Part of their strategy is to invest in projects that reduce the effect of carbon emissions. They are involved in reforestation efforts, capturing harmful methane gasses at landfill locations and wastewater facilities, and engage with other energy-efficient practices.
Renewable Energy Credits
Renewable Energy Credits(RECs), also known as Renewable Energy Certificates, are intangible assets that can be sold separately from the energy being produced at renewable generation sites. The RECs each represent 1 megawatt-hour of renewable energy. When a REC is purchased, 1 megawatt-hour of renewable energy is placed on the electric grid. Since fossil fuels were not used to generate power, greenhouse gas emissions are offset.

Green Mountain Energy began in Texas and now serves the deregulated energy market in Illinois, Oregon, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts. They provide green energy produced by solar and wind power.
Sun Club by Green Mountain Energy
Sun Club is a program started by Green Mountain Energy to empower local communities to participate in healthy energy solutions. Sun Club provides support to projects that promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, resource conservation, and other environmentally conscious efforts within the communities they serve.
Plans and Programs
Green Mountain Energy offers various 12 or 24-month contracts all of which are backed by renewable energy.
Solar Panel Fund
This is a program that supplies 65% solar power and 35% wind power to customers who select this program. Once enrolled the customer receives $600 in energy credits which can be used toward the future purchase of rooftop solar panels.
Carbon Conscious Plan
This program allows customers to buy carbon-conscious energy and rewards them by purchasing carbon offsets.
Renewable Rewards Buy-Back Program
This is a solar program that awards customers credits for the excess renewable energy they generate through their own solar system.
Foot Print Free Program
This program allows customers to enroll in 100% green energy plans and Green Mountain Energy purchases corresponding carbon offsets to support sustainability projects through the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club.
Solar Without Panel Installation
This plan permits customers to support solar power without having to install rooftop solar panels. The customer receives 10% of their energy from solar sources and 90% from wind-generated energy and Green Mountain contributes $4 per month per customer to support the advancement of solar power.
