Stream Energy
Stream Energy is a retail energy provider offering electricity and natural gas to residential and commercial customers in 7 states and Washington, DC. Stream Energy was founded in 2004 in Dallas, Texas by Rob Snyder and Pierre Koshakji. The parent company of Stream Energy is NRG Energy. Stream has a subsidiary known as Ignite.
Ignite
Ignite used a multi-level marketing approach as its primary sales channel. Individuals could sign up as sales agents for Ignite and sell electricity and natural gas to their friends and families. They then received a commission on those sales as well as bonus money for enrolling other sales associates. The multi-level marketing plan has come under intensive criticism over the past years with several lawsuits by sales associates still pending.
Service Areas
Stream Energy has 300+ employees who provide electricity and natural gas and related services to more than 600,000 customers in Texas, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Georgia, Maryland, Illinois, and Washington, DC. Originally only in operation in Texas, they expanded into the Northeast in 2010 to take advantage of energy deregulation. In 2015 they added wireless phone services to their product line under the name Stream Wireless.
Stream Energy Plans
Stream Energy offers fixed-rate, fixed-rate renewable, and month-to-month plans to its customers. To simplify their enrollment process they offer EZ Start and EZ Pay programs. They are proud of their award-winning customer service department which offers expertise on which plan is the best for each customer.
NRG Purchases Stream Energy
In 2019 Stream Energy was purchased by NRG Energy. The purchase price was $300,000 million in an all cash deal. The multi-level operation known as Ignite was separated from the NRG purchase and operates today as an independent company that was rebranded as Kynect. Kynect offers wireless phone services as well as electricity and natural gas products.
Community Involvement
Stream Energy is committed to giving back to the communities they serve. They support many charitable causes and organizations such as the American Red Cross. Their main focus is centered around homeless children and low-income families that need assistance paying their energy bills. Their charitable program known as “A Big Difference Starts Small” supports Captain Hope’s Kids as well as provides financial relief to those in need of energy assistance.
