History

Wylie was established in the early 1870s and received a boost in its population and economic growth when the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railroad was established in 1886 half a mile north of their location. The city, named for Lt. Colonel William D. Wylie, an agent of the railroad and a Civil War veteran, was incorporated in1887. Two years later the St. Louis Southwestern Railway became accessible to the people of Wylie. Now Wylie could depend on two rail lines and along with the rich agricultural land of Blackland Prairies their population grew rapidly. From 1890 until 1900 the population almost doubled growing from 400 residents to 773.

Unlike most cities in the US, Wylie benefited during the Great Depression since they were able to meet the dairy farming demands of nearby Dallas. Following World War II the city continued to grow rapidly.

Wylie is known for several disasters that took place in its relatively recent past. On Mother’s Day, 1993 a tornado ripped through the city destroying many buildings and damaging important structures such as Physician’s Regional Hospital which had to be temporarily shut down as more than 8,000 residents lost their electricity that fateful day. In December 1998, two fires ravaged the city destroying the majority of the downtown area. It was renovated and many of the century-old buildings were preserved and are still standing today. A most unusual event took place in April of 2016. Enormous hailstones the size of softballs fell from the sky damaging more than 80% of the homes in Wylie. The overall damage was estimated at 240 million dollars.

Economy

In 2019 Wylie, Texas was named the 26th Best Place to Live in the country and the 20th safest city in Texas. These accreditations spurred the economy bringing in new businesses and a wave of new residents. It became known as a great place to raise a family and build a business with award-winning schools and a forward-moving economic environment. The top five employers in Wylie are the Wylie Independent School District, Avanti Windows and Doors, Tom Thumb, a grocery chain, Sandan International, specializing in automotive air-conditioning systems, and Krogers, a large grocery retailer operating under many names in 35 states.

Fun Fact

Wylie is the hometown of David Beaty. David is known as an American football coach for the Houston Gamblers, a team in the United States Football League. His career included co-offensive and wide receiver coaching for Houston and he was a head coach for the University of Kansas between 2015 and 2018.

Wylie Electric Utility Company Resources

Texas, like many states in the U.S., has a deregulated energy market. Meaning, the market allows energy users to choose who supplies their electricity. Your energy will rely on two parties — your utility and provider. The local utility is Oncor Electric in Dallas, and this company handles power line maintenance and electricity distribution in your area. Your provider, often called a Retail Electric Provider (REP), supplies the electricity Oncor distributes.

Here is a map of Oncor’s service territory in Texas along with the major cities it covers. As you can see, both Dallas and Fort Worth are within the Oncor territory:
