About Nacogdoches, Texas


Nacogdoches is a small city located in East Texas, and of the same county. It is the sister city of Natchitoches, Louisiana. The city is located 140 miles northeast of Houston, Texas, and 180 miles southeast of Dallas, Texas. The city has a total area of 25.3 miles. Lake Nacogdoches is 10 miles west of the city and it lies just north of both the LaNana Creek as well as Banita Creek forks. 


Nacogdoches is known in some literature to be called the oldest town in Texas. Some evidence dates back to the settlement of the area over 10,000 years ago via the Nacogdoche tribe of Caddo Indians. The city has flown many flags including the Six Flags of Texas, the Magee-Gutierrez Republic, the Long Republic, and the Fredonian Rebellion. Americans began settling in the area in 1820, where Texas’ first English-language newspaper was published. 


The 2020 U.S. Census recorded Nacogdoches’ population at 32,147. The city had a median gross rent of $771 in contrast with the statewide median gross rent of $1,091 at the 2019 American Community Survey. Among the city’s population, there was a 37.5% homeownership rate and 2,068 vacant housing units in the city limits as of 2020. 


The city is home to Stephen F. Austin State University, which is responsible for much of the city’s economy. Other large resources include the healthcare industry, local manufacturing, agriculture, and the lumber industry within the city limits.
