Also known as Metropolitan Edison, Met-Ed operates in southeastern Pennsylvania and covers 3,300 square miles. They are one of 10 utilities owned by First Energy, a corporation that owns entities in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio and West Virginia.
Met-Ed uses a portion of First Energy’s 269,000 miles of distribution lines to serve the counties outside of the Philadelphia Metropolitan area. Some of the more prominent cities within the Met Ed territory include: Reading, PA, Eaton, PA, and parts of Bethlehem, PA.
A utility like Met-Ed is responsible for getting the power to the customers. Suppliers provide the energy that is sent across the power lines. Like many states in the U.S., Pennsylvania has a deregulated energy market, which gives utility customers the option to choose where they get their power.
As your utility, Met-Ed maintains the power lines and fixes any outages, regardless of who supplies your electric. When you choose a new supplier, they will set the rate you pay only for the supply portion of your bill. Your utility will still charge a fee for their portion of service.
In Pennsylvania, the state law says that utilities provide a default rate for users who haven’t switched to a supplier. These rates are called the Price to Compare (PTC), and change throughout the year.
The Met-Ed Price To Compare changes for residential and commercial customers every three months. The current Met-Ed Price To Compare is below:
