About Killeen, Texas

Location: 

Killeen is located in Bell County, Texas. It is the 19th most populated city in the state as well as the largest of the three principal cities in Bell County including Killeen, Temple, and Fort Hood. It is 55 miles north of Austin and 125 miles southwest of Dallas. It is also located 125 miles northeast of San Antonio. 

 

History: 

In 1881, the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway extended its tracks through central Texas, buying 360 acres a few miles southwest of a small farming community known as Palo Alto, which had existed since around 1872. By 1884, the town had grown to over 350 people as other locals around the area moved to Killeen. The city then included general stores, cotton gins, a lumberyard, a hotel, and a blacksmith shop.

 

Demographics: 

As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 153,095 people, 54,840 households, and 36,735 families residing within the city limits. The population density was 2,458.9 people per square mile. In 2007, Coldwell Banker ranked Killeen, Texas as the most affordable housing market in the United States with an average cost of $136,725.

 

Economy: 

Killeen Mall serves as the city’s main shopping destination, and one of two regional shopping malls in Bell County. The majority of Killeen’s residents include top employers Fort Hood with over 36,000 employees, Killeen Independent School District with close to 7,000 employees, various military contractors, and others.
