Located on the former site of a Karankawa Indian village, League City was founded by three families, the Butlers, the Cowarts, and the Perkinses. The first official resident of the town was George Bulter who named the town Butler’s Ranch until controversy broke out when J.C. League acquired the land and renamed it League City.
