About Tyler, TX


Tyler, Texas is the largest city in Smith County and is also the county seat. It is a principal city in the Greater Tyler metropolitan statistical area and the largest city in Northeast Texas. It is the halfway point between Dallas and Shreveport and 99.5 miles southeast of Dallas.

Tyler is named for John Tyler, the 10th President of the United States from 1841-1845. During this time, agriculture was the economic base as was logging, and some manufacturing including metalworking, milling wood, and leather tanning. By the end of the 19th-century fruit orchards began appearing with peaches being the most popular fruit grown. Eighty percent of the agricultural revenue came from growing cotton and relied heavily on slave labor prior to the Civil War. Tyler is most famous for being the rose capital of America and produces, cultivates, and processes hundreds of varieties of roses. It is home to the largest rose garden in the United States showcasing over 38,000 rose bushes and to the Texas Rose Festival held every October.

By 1971 the University of Texas at Tyler opened its doors followed by the Broadway Square Mall in 1975. These both helped increase the population and by 1980 there were 70,508 residents.

The University of Texas at Tyler was founded in 1971 as a public research University. It currently has a student population of over 10,000 students.
