About Wichita Falls, Texas

Location: 

Wichita Falls is a city in Wichita County, Texas. It is the principal city of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Archer, Clay, and Wichita counties. According to the 2010 census, it had a population of 104,553, making it the 38th-most populous city in Texas. Wichita Falls is about 15 miles south of the border with Oklahoma, 115 miles northwest of Fort Worth, and 140 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 70.71 square miles.

 

History: 

The Choctaw Native Americans settled the area in the early 1800s from their native Mississippi area after Americans negotiated to relocate them after the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek. The treaty was signed and proclaimed in 1830 or 1831. From 1841 on, a large Indian settlement was present in the area that is now the city of Wichita Falls.

 

Demographics: 

As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 102,316 people, 37,297 households, and 23,087 families residing in the city of Wichita Falls. As of the 2000 Census, 104,197 people, 37,970 households, and 24,984 families resided in the city. The population density was 1,474.1 inhabitants per square mile. The 41,916 housing units averaged 593.0 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 75.1% White, 12.4% African American, 0.9% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.4% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 14.0% of the population. 

 

Economy: 

Wichita Falls’ central business district is 5 miles from Sheppard Air Force Base, which is home to the Air Force’s largest technical training wing and the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program. It is the world’s only multi-nationally staffed and managed flying training program chartered to produce combat pilots for both USAF and NATO. It is also the largest employer in the area with over 7,000 employees. Other larger employers in the city include Wichita Falls Independent School District, United Regional Health Care System, Midwestern State University, The City of Wichita Falls, Arconic, and others.

Wichita Falls is also home to many parks and recreation areas including Lake Wichita, Lucy Park, a 170-acre park with a log cabin, duck pond, swimming pool, frisbee golf course, picnic areas, and more. It also features paved walkways for biking, rollerblading, and a river walk. Wichita Falls is the home of the annual Hotter’N Hell Hundred, the largest single-day century bicycle ride in the United States and one of the largest races in the world.
